Wooden buildings Nometnu Street Agenskalns District Riga is home of some historic old wooden buildings dating back to the early 1900’s. Take Tram 4 or 5 from the Old City. Exit Nometnu Street (first stop after Park Maritim Hotel). Walk along Nometnu street in both directions and just let your mind go back in time. Imagine what it would have been like the day that these marvelous buildings were dedicated. Rated 2 Roosters

Par Statue of Karlis Padegs Take a walk North along Merkela Street from the train station. As you pass the Circus make note that is one of the oldest in Europe. Cross K. Barona street and walk about 30 meters further on. You can’t miss the statue as it looks like the local playboy from the 1930’s. Be sure to take a flower for his jacket. Mr. Padegs (1911-1940) was a highly talented painter and graphic artist of his time. Some of his works are on display in the State Art Museum.  photo  Rated 1 Roosters

The Latvian Brown cow breed is considered to be one of the most distinguishing inventions in Latvia and is patented. The Latvian Brown was developed as a result of long years of work of multiple farmers, breeders and researchers. Still today, this breed constitutes 79 per cent of the total number of cows in Latvia.   In 1937, the Latvian State Electro-technical Plant (VEF) launched production of the first miniature camera in the world, VEF Minox. It was invented by Valters Caps from Riga. The VEF Minox was a completely new kind of camera. This miniature camera allowed achieving a precise and well-contrasted picture from the distance of 20 cm without any additional lens. This feature of the camera made it particularly attractive for agents of secret services who praised it for the possibility of shooting documents quickly, without any technical problems and of first-class quality.

Riga Market Photos

Riga was a major center of the Hanseatic League and prospered from its trade with central and eastern Europe in the 13th-15th centuries. The urban fabric of its medieval center reflects this prosperity, although most of its earlier buildings have been destroyed by fire and war. In the 19th century it became a very important economic center, and the suburbs of the medieval town were built, first in imposing wooden buildings in classical style and then in Jugendstil. It is generally recognized that Riga Latvia contains the finest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe.
